MEDICAL CONCERNS
WEIGHT CLASS
A goal of our coaching staff is to make each wrestler competitive in his appropriate weight class. It is our suggestion that parents of wrestlers who are of appropriate height and weight at the beginning of the season allow for growth during the season. For example, if your child weighs in at 50Lbs at the 1st practice of the season, 55 Lbs would be a good weight class for allowing the child to continue to grow without worrying about whether or not he will make weight at the next tournament. The wrestler will also be able to go up in weight class during the regular season. Once a wrestler weighs in for districts, he must compete at that weight for the entire State Tournament Series.
It has been my experience as a head high school coach that when a wrestler actually loses weight to wrestle during his childhood career, he becomes less motivated to wrestle at the high school level.
INJURIES
Wrestling does not pose any more of an injury risk to athletes than any other sport. Their bodies are young and flexible, and they are competing against opponents of equal weight and strength.
Because of the push and pull of wrestling, it will actually increase a young athlete's strength over a period of time, helping the athlete avoid injuries later in his athletic career.
Every injury that does occur will be treated properly by the coaching staff. We urge you to let us know about any injury that may have occurred to your child to ensure our awareness of the problem.
SKIN
The sport of wrestling does its best to protect the athletes. There are strict regulations about minor skin infections. This helps keep the incidents to a minimum. Our wrestling room is disinfected daily. The high school wrestlers also shower with Head and Shoulders as a body wash each night after practice. Head and Shoulders has an ingredient that helps prevent ringworm. It has been very effective at the high school level. We ask you to send your wrestlers to practice in clean practice gear each night. You may also consider using Head and Shoulders after nights when there is wrestling practice and evenings after tournaments. Because of the close skin contact, they could be exposed from another wrestler.
